The act of watching an entire season of a show in one sitting.
A totally valid excuse for avoiding social obligations.
Step aside FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), it’s 2019 and we’re all about JOMO. That friends, is the Joy Of Missing Out… sure, the event that you SHOULD be at looks fun on Instagram stories, but does anything really compete with a well-earnt rest, cosying up on the sofa and getting stuck in to Netflix’s latest movie selection?!
Basically, Netflix is sooo much better than going out and pretending to like people.
Now, if you’re going to indulge in a movie marathon then you must make sure you’re doing it right. Comfy clothing is a must. We’re talking pyjamas and your baggiest joggers, all wrapped up in the softest blanket you can find – steal your flat mates/ partners/ grandma’s – we’re not judging. Most importantly (and this is where we come in), you must have a strong snack game; Kettle Chips, Doritos, Sensations… go full Harry Potter on us and take the lot.
Then there’s the drinks… dear god, you don’t actually intend on pausing mid Lord of the rings to trek up the supermarket aisles in search for a decent drinks top-up, do you?! The aim of the game here is ultimate comfort and we all know pulling on a pair of jeans and braving the cold weather is NOT what this evening needs.
With an astounding number of movies on Netflix, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to pick out some favourites and, naturally, we’ve paired them with an appropriate tipple to make this cosy night in, the best ever!
So, without further ado, let’s get stuck in….
Our Top Netflix Films With Drinks To Match
Outlaw King – Robert the Bruce against the English, the Scottish wars of independence, yet no Mel Gibson shouting “FREEDOM!”… this is the 2018 adaptation of the Scottish fight against the ‘Auld Enemy’ starring Chris Pine. It’s only fitting to pair a proudly Scottish movie with a proudly Scottish drink… we’re loving Glasgow Gin, topped up with Fever-tree tonic. But, if gin’s not your thing, get a dose of Vitamin T, with an ice-cold Tennents.
The Revenant – Bitterly cold weather, men fighting amongst themselves and Leonardo Di Caprio getting mauled by a bear. Yeah. This is one powerful blockbuster of a movie. It’s the sort of movie that’s so well made, you feel cold just watching it. While they starve and freeze, luckily, you don’t have to! Warm up with a decadent boozy hot chocolate. Give it some flavour with a splash of Malibu for a coconutty kick, or pour in some Solerno, it’ll be like you’re drinking a chocolate orange!
Legally Blonde – There’s a couple of ways to enjoy a Reese Witherspoon classic – naturally a bottle of something equally bubbly like this fruity Castellore prosecco is a great place to begin. Or, in keeping with the title, crack open a chilled bottle of Leffe, Belgium’s premium blonde beer. Alternatively go full Elle Woods on us and drink pink. Gordon’s pink gin is packed with strawberries and raspberries (ahem, 1 of your 5 a day) or for something a little more instant, these ready to drink Gordon’s pink cans are delicious.
The Hangover – What drink delivers hangovers like no other? Tequila, or course! Now nobody likes hangovers, why would you? But The Hangover is a hilarious movie that deserves to be enjoyed with a great drink. So why not take that tequila and make you and your friends a pitcher of margaritas. Go old school with some classic Jose Cuervo, 1800 or Olmeca, or mix it up with some Tequila Rose Strawberry Liqueur. Have the perfect Hangover drink without such outrageous consequences!
The Pirates – Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. Okay, so the pirates in this movie are animated and probably aren’t as rum-soaked as those in Pirates of the Caribbean. Also unlike Pirates of the Caribbean, there is no kraken, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one. No, not the mythical sea monster, but the dark rum. Pour over ice for an irresistibly smooth drink. The movie is rated U, but the drink is definitely rated ARRRRR!
Get Out – This wonderful Oscar winning movie stars the talented Daniel Kaluuya; it’s a movie that deserves your full attention, so we’re thinking coffee! No, not the boring hot kind. Let’s mix it up with a damn tasty Black Sow Nitro Coffee Milk Stout (just trust us) or perhaps something a little heavier… you can always rely on Patron XO Café.
Insidious – A horror film like this deserves something equally dark. The Orkney Brewery’s Dark Island is an exceptionally smooth dark beer packed with chocolate, fig and nutty flavours. Best to drink it from the bottle in case you jump mid-movie, this ale’s too good to spill!
Valentine’s Day – So Valentine’s Day may have been and gone this year but love should flow any day… and by love we do of course mean Eden Mill Love Gin; a fantastic accompaniment to a cheesy rom-com. We like it with Fentimans pink grapefruit tonic and plenty of ice (we can provide that too).
Mama Mia – To truly get into the spirit of the movie you need to embrace the Greek island spirit and make up some fruity cocktails. These will certainly help unleash the vocals for the inevitable sing-along! Mama Mia Mojito’s are a must. Just grab a bottle of Bacardi, some sugar water, a few limes and a sprig of mint and you’re good to go!
Birdbox – Sandra Bullock has been in a lot of movies, some good, some… err… *sips on drink*. Birdbox may not be an all time classic, but as far as Netflix original movies go, this was a smash hit. Why not take in Birdbox with some bird-themed drinks? If whiskey is your thing then get on the Famous Grouse. More of a beer drinker? Then Birds and Bees is a must try – a delicious golden ale from William Bros. Whatever your drink of choice, please don’t pour Birdbox style, that’s just going to get messy!
So, there you have it, ten movies to dive into on Netflix. You don’t have to take these bevvy recommendations from us, but we have done some totally scientific tests (absolutely no science involved!) and can confirm that these delicious drinks will enhance your Netflix experience like no other.
Of course, no matter what your choice in drink… get it delivered by Drinkly for the ultimate relaxed evening in!
